The Envirolution Sustainability Tour is an exciting five-day opportunity for Northern Nevada youth, ages 12-18, to travel to Reno businesses and organizations to explore green careers, environmentally friendly practices, and the local sustainability movement. Each day, the tour focused on a guiding question as a means of focusing on one aspect of the local sustainability movement. The tour was offered in 2015 and 2016 during the Washoe County School District fall break to enable middle school and high school students an opportunity to receive extra credit while having a fun exploration of future career possibilities. The tours concluded with a community cleanup of Pickett Park providing an opportunity for tour participants to make a difference in their community.
The 2015 event received some good media coverage from print and television. Articles were published in the Reno News and Revue (11/05) and this is reno.com (10/18). Reporters from News Channel 8 and News Channel 4 gave on-site interviews.
2nd Annual Sustainability Tour – October 3-7, 2016
The second annual Sustainability Tour took place October 3-7, 2016. The students got to travel via electric bus and here’s what they saw: the Peppermill geothermal operation and sustainability practices, the Oxbow Nature Park, the Lockwood Landfill, Reno Recycling Center, KTMB Waste Warriors presentation, NV Energy renewable energy operation, Envirohaven energy efficient home, the Patagonia warehouse, and the River School Farm.
Here’s what a student, parent and tour partner had to say about the event:
“The Envirolution Sustainability tour is one of the most exciting and interesting tours I, and other students, have ever taken. It is clear that by the end of the tour, the students are the experts and leaders of the environment improving community. In just five days, we became friends and had a great time together, and together we bring changes to the world. – The 2016 “Eco-Warriors.”- Eric Duong
“Thank you! My daughter, Yasmin, enjoyed Envirolution’s Sustainability Tour and learned a lot too. I can’t breath anymore without hearing a comment like “this is not good for the environment” or “this is not the right way to do it”. By Ana Tayahi.
“The Sustainability Tours offer so much to the students and the community at large, and there are rewards for the participating partners as well. It’s quite uplifting to be able to assist in inspiring the next generation to understand the importance of sustainable practices and to engage in more three-sphere compatable behaviors,” said Carol Perry, Sustainability Tour partner and Trip Reduction Specialist for the Regional Transport Commission.
